RecommendationsStrains May Float by Anna SThis is another Sentinel novella, on the order of 250k. Anna took on the gargantuan challenge of making Girl Next Door into an interesting story that really gives us a window into the guys' heads (the upper heads, I mean!) It's also includes domestic discipline, but I wouldn't call it a DD story. The dynamics are unusual. I walked away from it a little unsatisfied because the relationship between the two men doesn't change by the end of the story. The two of them enter a headspace where they both are individually considering change, but they haven't changed as a unit by the time the author writes, "The End." That's my one complaint. Otherwise, it's an epitome of what I like best about TS fandom. Writers take a TV show of dubious quality (pretty fun, yes, but dubious quality) and then expand it in all directions. recommended 29.11.00 | permalink Revising History by racThis X Files story starts a little slowly but the location description is good and the ending is solid. recommended 25.11.00 | permalink Want versus Need by Brenda AntrimDarla was an excellent Angel episode. And this is the story from Lindsay's point of view, and also what might happen after. Painful and beautiful.

I also like the fact that Lianne takes a Star Trek cliché (kidnapped by aliens and forced to participate in a strange sex ritual) and has Tuvok turn it into something very low key. No angst, no torture, just a little nausea and a lot of warmth. recommended 25.11.00 | permalink Nuance by Resonant and LiviaAlmost 200k, this is a Sentinel story about Jim getting an emotional clue in a big way. It's a revealing, subtle glimpse inside Jim's head, and it leads the senses in a direction that seems like a natural step forward from the present. recommended 24.11.00 | permalink Everything's Jake by AlyjudeI was immediately intrigued when I saw that this story was 409k. The longer it is, the more I'm able to forgive. Strange, but true. However, the most there is to forgive in this piece is a few typographical errors. Perhaps a total of five. In other ways, it's an easy, gentle piece, that goes down very smoothly. However, I must warn that this story is kidfic, and yes, the story revolves almost entirely around the kid. On the other hand, Alyjude is wonderful at portraying kids and 'intelligent' animals. Sometimes, I think that's why she's so good at writing Blair. :) Also, the resolution of our major conflict smacks of slasher's mysogyny. I don't think Alyjude really has a mysogynyst theme to her fiction - she clearly loves both Naomi and Megan, and does not feel Caro was a bad guy, just not the person for Jim - but the ending is suspicious. recommended 21.11.00 | permalink Close Encounters of the Fourth Kind II: And Then There Were Two by JosanThis is a sequel to Close Encounters of the Fourth Kind, and it is a happier, gentler story. Josan will write these sweetly funny stories, but usually they're about Skinner's and Krycek's (and perhaps Mulder's) contentment with their relationship. This time, they get to enjoy someone else ... more or less. recommended 13.11.00 | permalink |
