Farscape Adult Fanfiction Ring

Why this ring

PK Lil took over the Farscape Fanfiction Ring. In addition to requiring a minimum number of fics and that authors be properly credited for their work, she introduced content restrictions and mandatory, specific warnings.

I think this is a bad idea, for reasons detailed in the sidebar. However, the ring is now PK Lil's ring and I'm not going to protest her right to run it in whatever manner she sees fit. She was willing to adopt the ring and I wasn't, so she gets to make the rules there.

I will, however, create an alternate ring which reflects my own beliefs about how a ring should be run: if the website is on-topic, let it in.

as quoted from slashslut

Well, something happened that makes me feel really ambivalent. PK Lil took over the Farscape Fanfiction Webring. And it's a good thing that the ring will have some active management now. For the past several months, it's been hanging in limbo, with the webring automanagement stuff taking care of it, rather than an active ring manager. That's not good, you get rings who remove their code or move it some place hideous and the ring gets broken.

However, she's added some rules to the ring that I don't like. Well actually, it's just rule 4, and I'll quote it here:

"Adult" or erotic content is acceptable--within reason. If it is violent, degrading to women/children, invovles (sic) animals, etc. then it is NOT acceptable. I don't want to read dren about Crichton raping Scorpy while Crais hangs by his nipples from fish hooks, okay?! I like a good frell better than the next geek, but let's keep it pleasant for all involved shall we. Otherwise, I'm not your editor or your mommy. Go to town. BUT: all adult content must carry a warning including a rating (using the standard MPAA system) and explanation of content, i.e. strong language, adult situations, strong sexual content, etc.

First of all, that blanket "etc." doesn't let you know if you're wasting your time applying to the ring. Whatever it is that squicks PK Lil all to hezmana and back is what keeps you out of the ring ... and what that is, she doesn't tell you.

Second, what's violent and is it necessarily unreasonable to have such stories even if they are violent? And does she just mean violent combined with sex? What about BDSM? Is that automatically violent? Or is she just talking about non-consensual activities (which don't have to involve any weapons or show of strength)?

Degrading to women or children is a complete value judgement. And does that mean degrading to all women and children or if it just degrades the particular characters in a story, is that okay? And why is it fine to degrade men?

As for animals, let me break this down for you. One, human beings are animals. Two, if we indulge in the polite fiction that human beings are not animals, we haven't resolved the issue of whether or not any of the Farscape characters (aside from John, human, and Zhaan, plant) are animals because they are aliens and not humans. And supposing we decide that the aliens are animals -- is writing about two animals having sex together innately disgusting?

As for warnings, there is a lot of controversy about them. To many authors and for many stories, warnings constitute spoilers. Also, the MPAA code doesn't make any sense and many international users don't understand it (in large part because it doesn't make any sense). Requiring a blanket warning that a site includes erotic stories or violent stories is sensible for a general fanfic ring. You never know if someone came from a site with just gen stories or not, and kids who don't want to read erotica might start following the ring. But, it doesn't make sense to require individual story ratings. That's a matter of decision for the archivist or author whose page it is.

How to qualify for and join this ring

  1. Have a page with at least three separate pieces of Farscape fanfiction. This includes poems, filks, roundrobins, and story chapters, as well as more traditional short stories.
    • If you don't have fanfiction on your page, but it somehow directly relates to adult Farscape fanfiction, then you can submit your site for evaluation. While all of the sites having adult fanfiction will qualify, I'm going to play god on the non-fiction sites. As I begin the webring, the two non-fiction sites which qualify are slashslut, which is a group blog for Farscape slash authors and the ring homepage. Other sites which might qualify are recommendation sites, sites with essays about Farscape fiction, etc.
  2. At least three of these stories must have graphic depictions of sex, violence, or psychological torture which could be deemed inappropriate for children. Think of it this way, if an episode depicting your story would get slapped with a TV-MA, NC-17, 18+, or other rating describing it as strictly for adults, that's what we're looking for.
  3. Complete the join form and put the code on your webpage . Because I do not use graphics, I do insist that the webring code appear on the page that links to the stories (e.g a table of contents, index, or search engine) or your homepage/frontpage, rather than a separate webring or warning page.
  4. E-mail me to let me know that you have added the code to your page. In this e-mail please include the URLs to three of the stories that are adult, as well as the page where you've put the webring code. I want to make sure that people searching the ring will, indeed, find adult fanfiction when they use the ring.
